How it usually shows up
- Pain running from the low back or buttock down the back of one leg
- Worse sitting, worse driving, sometimes eased by walking
- Tingling or numbness into the calf or foot
- A leg that feels heavy or unreliable on stairs
What Dr. Chris actually does about it
Sciatica means pain traveling along the sciatic nerve, usually from the low back or buttock down the back of one leg. It has more than one possible cause. Disc bulges and herniations account for a large share of cases, but a restricted lumbar segment, an unlevel pelvis, or a tight muscle deep in the hip can all produce a similar pattern of pain down the leg. Chiropractic tends to help sciatica when the cause is mechanical, meaning a joint in the low back or pelvis is not moving the way it should and is putting pressure on a nerve root as it exits the spine.
Dr. Chris does not adjust a level just because that is where the pain is felt. He works the pelvis and lumbar spine level by level, using a nervoscope reading along with static and motion palpation to find which segment is actually restricted, then confirms the direction of the shift on your films before adjusting anything. Because the pelvis is the foundation the lumbar spine sits on, an unlevel pelvis is often part of why one particular level keeps getting loaded and irritated in the first place.

Questions people ask
- Does chiropractic help with sciatica?
- Chiropractic care can help sciatica when the cause is mechanical, meaning a joint or disc in the low back or pelvis is putting pressure on a nerve root. It does not help every case, because sciatica describes where you feel pain, not what is causing it. An exam, and in this practice a set of films, is what determines whether adjustment is a reasonable option for your case.
- Can a chiropractor make sciatica worse?
- It is possible, though not common when care starts with a real exam. The main risk is adjusting a segment without first ruling out a large disc herniation or clear neurological signs like specific leg weakness, which is why films are taken before any adjustment here rather than after. A brief increase in symptoms during the first few visits can also happen and is not the same as being made worse.
- How long does it take for a chiropractor to help sciatica?
- There is no set timeline, because it depends on what the exam and films find and how long the segment has been irritated. Some people notice a change within the first few visits, and others take longer, particularly when a disc is involved or the problem has been building for years. Dr. Chris tells you what to expect for your case after the exam rather than quoting a general number.
- Is a chiropractor or acupuncture better for sciatica?
- They work through different mechanisms. Chiropractic addresses sciatica caused by a restricted or misaligned segment putting pressure on a nerve root, while acupuncture is aimed more at pain and muscle tension than joint position. Dr. Chris does not offer acupuncture and will not compare their effectiveness, but the two are commonly used together rather than as a strict either-or choice.
- Osteopath or chiropractor, which is better for sciatica?
- In the United States, an osteopath (DO) is a licensed physician who can prescribe medication and order surgery, and hands-on manipulation is only one part of their training. That is different from the UK, where osteopathy is its own manual therapy profession closer to chiropractic. Chiropractic, including the Gonstead method used here, is a manual, spine-specific approach; which one fits depends on whether your case needs a medical workup or a structural one.
- Can sciatica be cured by a chiropractor?
- No provider, chiropractic or otherwise, can honestly promise a cure for sciatica, because sciatica has more than one possible cause and some of them are not structural at all. What Gonstead analysis can do is find and correct the specific segment involved when the cause is mechanical, which addresses the underlying issue rather than only easing the pain. Anyone who promises sciatica will be cured is overselling what any provider can guarantee.
- When is sciatica a medical emergency instead of a chiropractic case?
- Go to urgent care or an ER, not a chiropractor's office, if you have new loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or leg weakness that keeps getting worse. Sciatica that started after a serious fall or accident also needs medical evaluation first. Outside of those signs, sciatica is generally reasonable to have evaluated by a chiropractor.
